When should my child begin piano instruction?
In most cases, seven or eight years old is an appropriate age for students to begin lessons.
What if my child is younger than seven? Can he/she take lessons?
Dr. Olson will be happy to interview your child to determine if she or he is “ready” for piano lessons.
Do I need to have a piano in my home?
Yes. Regular practice is essential to a successful experience.
What kind of piano do I need?
Any piano that has working keys or a weighted key electronic keyboard with eighty-eight keys and a pedal feature is also acceptable for new students.
Do you teach adults?
Yes. Adults are welcome to resume, continue or begin lessons.
What kind of music do you teach?
Younger students work from a method instruction workbook for the first two years. Once a student is comfortable reading music a balance of classical and popular styles will then be explored.
Adults are free to choose the music and or styles of music they wish to learn.
Does my child have to participate in any competitions?
No. Each child is treated individually and decisions about participation in outside events are possible but require planning and coordination between students, parents and the instructor. Competitions are always encouraged but not required.
Does my child have to participate in recitals?
No. Playing in a recital is a wonderful opportunity for students to share their music before an audience of family and friends and experiencing the joy of accomplishment. Usually a recital is a welcome event to most students but after careful consideration, some students may choose not to participate in recitals.
